A 5.5-magnitude earthquake was recorded in southern Iran on Tuesday at 8.59am, UAE time, according to the UAE's National Centre of Meteorology (NCM).

The Met Department has confirmed it was "slightly felt by residents". But the NCM also stated that the temblor as felt without any effect in the UAE. Few residents reportedly felt the tremors, and took to social media. A commenter on Facebook asked: "Did anyone feel an earthquake in dubai?"

The quake was at a depth of 10 km (6.21 miles), GFZ said. The earthquake occurred in northern Hormozgan Province at around 08:29 Oct. 17. The epicenter was about 61 km (38 miles) north of Bandar Abbas. The tremor occurred at a depth of about 10 km (6 miles), and light shaking was probably felt across most of Hormozgan, southeastern Fars, and southwestern Kerman provinces in Iran and far northern United Arab Emirates (UAE). There have been no initial reports of damage or casualties; however, damage is possible in areas near the epicenter. It could take several hours until authorities can conduct comprehensive damage assessments, especially in remote areas. Aftershocks are likely over the coming days.

Experts had earlier said that UAE residents have no reason to worry about earthquakes.

"The UAE has low to moderate seismicity; hence we are safe. We are not on the active seismic belt," Khalifa Al Ebri, director of Department of Seismology, NCM, had said in a previous report .

"We have frequent tremors ranging from two to three in a year. People do not feel most of these tremors and they are just detected by the sensors. All these tremors do not affect the buildings or the infrastructure (in the country)."
