New Delhi: The captain of the Pakistan cricket team, Babar Azam made a stylish comeback as he hit a half-century against Afghanistan in Chennai to take his team’s total to 282-7. He scored 74 runs off 92 and before him, it was opener Abdullah Shafique who provided a decent start to the innings with his 75-ball 58. The Men in Green did see middle order push in the form of Shadab Khan and Iftikhar Ahmed’s 40 each.
Afghanistan had a World Cup debutant who was called in specially for the spin-friendly track at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. Eighteen-year-old Noor Ahmad did prove himself to be worthy of the inclusion as he bagged his career-best figures 3-49. The team had three more slow bowlers. Shadab Khan joined hands with Iftikhar Ahmed and made a 73-run stand for the sixth wicket adding 61 runs in the final over.

Iftikhar Ahmed smashed four sixes and two fours while Shadab Khan smashed one each. Shafique wasn’t supported by his counterpart Imam-ul-Haq as Azmatullah Omarzai struck and made him walk back on 17. It was then that Noor Ahmad picked his first scalp making Abdullah Shafique depart. His innings consisted of five fours and two sixes.
Ahmad picked his second wicket and caught top-scorer Mohammad Rizwan in his web. Babar Azam too fell his victim as he handed the ball to veteran Mohammad Nabi at extra covers. He hit four fours and a six with Saud Shakeel (25) briefly supporting him. It was strange to witness star spinner Rashid Khan going wicket-less in his over quota. Pacer Naveen ul Haq bagged two wickets.

The highest successful ODI chase of Afghanistan was against the United Arab Emirates when they chased 274 in Dubai nine years ago. Noor Ahmad replaced Fazalhaq Farooqui in the game while Pakistan had Shadab come in place of Mohammad Nawaz who caught a fever in the morning of the game.
