The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has secured the top spot in the MENA region and is ranked 7th globally in the electric vehicle (EV) readiness index, according to a report by Arthur D. Little. The report, titled “Global Electric Mobility Readiness Index (GEMRIX) 2023,” highlights the UAE’s commitment to sustainable transport and its ambitious goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2050.
Compared to the previous year, the UAE has moved up one place in the rankings. The report indicates that 82 percent of residents in the UAE are willing to purchase an electric vehicle as their next vehicle, demonstrating a growing acceptance of EVs among the population. This increased adoption can be attributed to the UAE government’s active promotion of EVs through initiatives like the Dubai Green Mobility Strategy 2030, which aims to have 42,000 electric cars on the roads by 2030.
One of the key factors contributing to the UAE’s progress in the EV market is the EV Green Charger initiative. This initiative has significantly expanded the availability of charging stations throughout the country, with the number of charging stations reaching 700. This infrastructure development ensures that there is adequate support for the growing number of EVs on the road.
The UAE’s achievement in EV readiness is in line with other emerging EV markets such as the US, Japan, and India, which are also making steady progress towards e-mobility. These countries have achieved scores between 40 and 60 in the readiness index. However, Norway remains the global leader in EV readiness, with China emerging as a close competitor.
Joseph Salem, Partner at Arthur D. Little Middle East, commended the UAE government’s commitment to EVs and their increasing usage in the country. He emphasized the significance of incentives and charging infrastructure in achieving the UAE’s carbon neutral goal by 2050.
Overall, the UAE’s top ranking in the MENA region and its global position in EV readiness underscore its dedication to sustainable transportation. With continued efforts and investments in EV infrastructure, the UAE is poised to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles and contribute to a greener future.
