The Rapid Action Battalion busted a ring that kidnapped and held hostage the relatives of expatriates, duping and forcing the latter to smuggle gold and other valuable goods illegally into Bangladesh.
The law enforcers arrested three men, allegedly members of the kidnapping ring, and rescued a hostage in the capital on Thursday night.
Khorshed Alam, Jewel Rana Majumder and Masum Ahmed were apprehended and Syed Ali Manadal, father of a United Arab Emirates expatriate, was rescued from a flat at Shantinagar.
At a journalist briefing on Friday, RAB media wing director Khandaker Al Moin said that Syed Ali’s son Nurunnabi worked in Dubai, UAE, but he decided to return to Bangladesh as he could not secure a better job.
The ring members in Dubai contacted him, offered the air ticket fare, and in return of the favour, asked him to carry some goods to Bangladesh.
Nurunnabi informed his family that he would arrive at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka on October 9. His father Syed Ali came to the airport from Jashore to receive his son, but then went missing from there, said Moin.
His family filed a missing general dairy the following day, and while investigating the incident, a team of RAB-3 traced the ring.
The racket with 15 members in it has been active for about six years, said Moin, adding that its leader is an expatriate named Abu Yusuf.
Their usual operational method is to ask returnee expatriates to carry luggage, weighing 25-30 kilograms containing gold, smartphones, laptops and other electronic devices, in return of air ticket fares, said the RAB director.
The racketeers then kidnap relatives of the expatriates and hold them hostage until they get back their goods smuggled into Bangladesh, evading customs duty, said the RAB officer.
The goods are usually sold to different markets at Paltan and Gulistan.
